Any company needs to make a profit to survive. However we believe that this shouldn’t be at the expense of the community or the environment. We recognise that all our actions have social and environmental consequences that must be paid for.
Quite rightly, people and governments are increasingly unwilling to pick up the bill for the environmental damage or pollution created by some industries. Or the social effects of, for example, low wages or unfair working practices.
A real measure of the success of a business should take into account all these factors: economic, social and environmental. Because companies are now being asked to pay for the pollution they create and to be more accountable to their employees and society, this is not just philanthropy – it is also the foundation of a solid business model.
So when we look at any aspect of our business we try to quantify its relative merits not just in financial terms – but also its social and environmental impact. We call this the ‘Triple Bottom Line’. It’s something that informs all the processes and products of our company.
